Kindle Yaoi: No Bye, No Aloha

I’ve been emailed about this Amazon vs. Yaoi thing, so yeah, I know what’s going on.  I was told months ago that two of my titles would be transitioned to ‘erotica’, so I figured the ‘yaoi’ subcategory in manga was going the way of the T-Rex.   As with all massive transitions, there’s bound to be drama.  None of my titles were affected mostly because only two of my titles were ever categorized as ‘yaoi’.  Games with Me and Loud Snow were written for and aimed at, fans of traditional Japanese yaoi.  Neither of those titles will be removed, because neither of them is truly explicit. [Shoot, Loud Snow is downright rated G—it’s Disney yaoi.]  Games with Me got a pass because, like Android 17 from DBZ, it’s too pretty.  I won’t advocate an Amazon boycott because KINDLE has been good to me—and the Nook still has yet to impress me.  Yes I did profit from the Nook’s launch, when sales were at their highest—but Nook is tough because BN allows Nook users to ‘read for free’ at the store, and I’ve discovered Nook readers of manga will do just that—read for free at the store.  ((>_<))

I’m waiting for The Beat to finally write that ‘Here’s the Yaoi Backlash‘ article they’ve been so desperate to publish for years now.  Yaoi-fans aren’t going to get the same satisfaction as the gay community did, when their fiction was victim of a ‘glitch’.  Straight female reader’s macking on male homoerotic comic characters doesn’t warrant the same consideration as an actual group of historically marginalized people.

I liked the old days where the only way you could access Japanese BL was via passwords and joining mature genre communities. “But Tina, your work benefited from its exposure…” yes it did, to a degree.  I was selling print doujinshi long before I helped make ‘global bl’ a semi-coherent micro-niche, and I did it quite well.  I have some smidgen of talent—and talent stays with you, no matter what you write.  Since I don’t equate GloBL and Japanese BL as one genre…I don’t see an issue here for GloBL fans.  If Japanese BL goes back underground, then I shall go back down with it—as a fan, not a creator.  GloBL comics is doing just fine, and I intend to keep reading it online where it’s flourishing–lots of web comics out there, and they’re consistently producing chapters.  In my opinion, there’s no real mainstream GloBL publisher out there anymore [sorry but if 95.9% of your new releases consist of your own written work—then you’re a circle, not a publisher].  I say let’s let Japanese BL lapse into a coma, so those of us that loved the genre way back when can whisk it from it’s over-crowded hospice, and put it back in our basements, where it was most fun.

Ok, that said—now its time to get back to what this blog is really about, which is my pathetic life.

So Monday was the proverbial day from hell.  It started off with my coming into work and being told I screwed up a foreign currency order.  And I did.  What a moron.  I put the wrong account number on the currency order sheet and some poor woman was charged for Euros she never bought.  It was fixed as soon as I got it—but still, massive error on my part and I felt like an idiot.

Next was the COMAC machine.  It’s my banks version of a “cointstar” and I’m its custodian.  Well, instead just clearing out the days coin transactions—I cleared out the entire machine’s coin transactions.  Which meant I have to empty the change bucket, bag it, and sell it to the main vault; lovely.

It gets better—I had about two bottles of Arizona’s ‘DIET’ Green Tea … which had Splenda in it.  I didn’t realize it had Splenda in it, and so by 3:00 [our busiest time BTW] I felt like a xenomorph was trying to claw its way through my intestines, and out of my ass.

I did get to the gym by 6:30 and got my workout in.  Nothing went wrong there—Got home, too tired to eat.  I had some cheese and wine [lots of cheese!] and couldn’t watch Netflix because it was down.  [Great timing!] but checked out some Youtube vids and watched some Crackle TV.

Today HAS TO BE BETTER.  It’s mandatory. 0_0

  1. Hi! Its been awhile since I posted anything on your blog. Honestly, I cannot completely condemn Amazon for what they are doing even though they haven’t stated fully why they are doing it. Amazon has been very good to me because I ordered an expensive machine that was defective and I got a full refund without any hassles. I had a package misplaced and they sent me another one without any hassles. I wasn’t surprised at the fandom’s quick reaction to the news as well.

I’m waiting for Japanese yaoi/BL to go underground again. Its probably sooner than I think since many BL publishers are going down the tubes. I’m not happy with the latest acquisitions and quality. Its more about quantity than quality which is very unfortunate. As a result, I don’t even purchase any more English-translated BL. I started reading more non-BL manga from Vertical and Viz. Alot of DC and Marvel comics and stuff from Fantagraphics too. It seems eons ago when I purchased my yaoi material from Aestheticism Cybershoppe which is where I got my jump start!

I hope everything is well with you and your weight loss endeavors. With work, I hope you were not stoned for your mistake. >_< Take care as always! ^_^

  2. It wouldn’t be the first time I got stoned for my words and action in regard to fandom. ^_- I can take it.

I remember the Cybershoppe! I liked it…until I got to know some of the doujinshika and saw the drastic price differences between when they were selling their work for, and was the Shoppe was selling it for. Soured me a bit…but in the end I understood the need for markup.

  3. I know you can. ^_^ I kind of miss your tongue lashing because many in the fandom truly need it yet I do realize that it isn’t going to accomplish squat.

With the Cybershoppe, it was the only online store state side where I could get smutty Ozaki doujinshis which I still own to this day. Then came JPQueen and Happy Otaku Home and it was over for Cybershoppe. Now JPQueen is gone and I don’t go to Happy Otaku as often as I used to. Oh well, I still have my early smut collection stashed somewhere in my home. ^_^

  4. I miss JPQueen muchly. =_=; Truth be told, I still have a shit ton of Gundam Wing, Yu Yu Hakusho, Trigun, and DBZ doujinshi. I started collecting again recently– most Goku/Vegeta stuff, but then I fell out of it.

If I can’t buy direct from Japan, I wont buy at all. I stop reading scanslations when groups like Nakama started getting egotarded and of course– Yaoi Daily decided what was and was not “Asian”. Those incidents were like omens, really.

  5. Wow! Gundam Wing yaoi doujinshis? I remember how vast that fandom was and how quickly it fizzed out! I’m seriously thinking about purchasing the PVC Vegeta statue I saw online.

Nakama egotarded? Hmm….I haven’t read scanlations in a long time so the news doesn’t surprise me much. ^_^ Oh by the way, a belated Happy Mother’s Day!
